The one centavo
proofs are attractive, well struck coins. While they’re not easy to find in choice or gem proofs, none of the dates are overly difficult.
But what is difficult is finding these centavos in full, blazing red. Because of the hot,
humid weather, almost all of these coins have turned color, and in full RED these coins are rare.
For example, PCGS has graded only 8 1906 centavos RED. And two that I’ve seen were
marginal, i.e., they could have been graded RED-BROWN as easily as red.
The 1906 centavo proof is the hardest date in RED of any grade. The 1905 and 1906
centavo proofs are tied for the hardest date in GEM RED. They’re excessively rare: only 5 for each year.
