The large size
makes these coins very lovely, but it’s an extremely difficult series, filled with dates that are almost impossible to find in unc condition and dates where it
is indeed impossible to find in gem unc.
The 1903 for instance is a hoarded coin and is the most common in unc. But I had the
misfortune of having to buy 3 rolls of these fifty centavos in so-called unc condition as part of a bigger deal and they were all unc but they were so filled
with bag marks, nicks and dings, that out of three rolls of uncs, all I got was one MS-63, all the rest came in at AU-58 to MS-62. So there’s a coin that’s
common in MS-60 to 62, scarce in 63, and rare in 64 up. As I write this for the 1903 fifty centavo, 50 coins have been graded unc, far and away the greatest number for
any fifty centavo piece, but only one has been graded gem.
The 1905-S, 1908-S and 1909-S, are all killer dates. Take the 1905-S, which is one of the key dates, only seven uncs
have been graded and none of them are gems. It’s the same also for the 1908-S, there are only four uncs and only one of them is in gem. The famous 1903-S, is the rarest of
the fifty centavos. There are only two known, both have been graded EF-45 by ANACS.
The fifty centavos series impossible to complete in unc condition because no 1903-S fifty centavo has ever been found in unc. But, it’s a fun series and if your patient, you can get the coins at least in almost unc.
